Shat Gambuj Mosque, Khulna


The Shat Gambuj Mosque in Khulna was built by Azam Ulugh Khan Jahan in 1459. It stands majestically on the east bank of large sweet-water tank, encircled by a canopy of trees. It is situated in the Bagerhat near the seacoast, near the mangrove forests of the Sunderbans. The Shat Gambuj Mosque, Khulna is one of Bangladesh's largest multi-domed mosques.


Though Shat means 60 in Bengal there are 81 domes or gambuj which adorn the roofs of the Shat Gambuj Mosque, Khulna. The mosque houses 77 squat domes which include 7 chauchala. Besides the mosque houses a prayer hall which has 11 arched doorways facing the east, 7 doorways in the south and 7 in the north. Moreover, the Shat Gambuj Mosque, Khulna is separated into 7 aisles and 11 bays. The architecture of the mosque reflects Tughlaq architecture in Delhi. The mosque is 160 feet in length and 108 feet in width. The mosque is built with red burn mud.
